Our Easter Series this year is called ‘Learned Experience: Easter 2021.’ This is a four sermon series exploring how our understanding of who Jesus is and what He has come to invite us into, is shaped by the experience and events of Jesus’ own journey towards and beyond the cross. Each sermon will focus on a different experience or set of events taken from John’s Gospel including Jesus’ arrest, His rejection, His condemnation, and culminates on Easter Sunday in His encounter with Mary and the disciples after His resurrection. Jesus’ whole life is an invitation for to us to join in with God’s story, and my prayer is that this Easter we will learn and be shaped again, as we explore the experience of Jesus.

And here are a two resources that you might like to engage with if you choose to spend some time reflecting on Maundy Thursday:

The first is a pre-recorded Tenebrae service produced by Gymea Baptist Church last year and hosted by me. Tenebrae or The Service of Shadows encourages us to reflect on the 8 shadows that precede the crucifixion of Jesus and ties in well with our exploration of Jesus’s experiences in our own Easter Series. You will want to gather some candles and bread and juice for communion if you choose to use this resource.

Secondly, if you like to engage in a more sensory way with the events of Easter, then you might appreciate this plan for a Maundy Thursday evening Passover Meal and Reflection on the Garden of Gethsemane. Produced by Carol Marples of the Soul Marks Trust and recommended by the Scottish community of faith at Iona.  Click PDF.
