“The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I, the Lord, will answer them; I will not forsake them. I will make rivers flow on barren heights and springs within the valleys. I will turn the deserts into pools of water…”

Here the prophet Isaiah does not just speak about those who may be suffering physically from lack of water. His metaphor is spiritual. He addresses those whose lives are drying up, whose hope is gone, who have seemingly nothing to live for. His promise is new life, water where once there was drought, growth where once there was death, a future where there was once only a past. This is God’s promise to us. As it was in Isaiah’s time, so God today offers to replace drought in our lives with the life-giving water of His Holy Spirit. He wants to renew and refresh us and make everything come alive again. That may be difficult to believe at times in our complex world situation today. But this is God’s will and purpose for us, however unlikely it may look right now. Will you today give Him the chance to do that work in your life so that you too can come alive in him?
